In safe, expert hands
At Spa Bottom Treatment Rooms, your CryoPen treatment will be carried out by Catherine — our highly experienced skin specialist with an exceptional background in skin health and safety.
Catherine — Senior Skin Specialist
With 38 years of experience in the skin industry, Catherine has undertaken extensive specialist training in early skin cancer detection and Dermoscopy.
She is qualified to assess lesions using a medical Dermatoscope prior to any treatment — an essential step in ensuring that CryoPen is the right and safe choice for each individual client.
Catherine's depth of knowledge and careful, considered approach means you are always in the very best hands.
What is Dermoscopy?
Dermoscopy involves the use of a specialist medical instrument called a Dermatoscope to examine skin lesions in detail. It allows our therapist to assess the structure and characteristics of a lesion far beyond what is visible to the naked eye — helping to identify whether a lesion is benign and suitable for CryoPen treatment, or whether further investigation is needed.
This clinical assessment is a cornerstone of safe, responsible skin lesion treatment.
Your CryoPen journey
A consultation is required before any CryoPen treatment takes place. This is an important step — it allows us to assess your skin concern properly and ensure you receive the most appropriate and effective care.
1. Initial consultation & Dermatoscope assessment
Depending on the nature of your lesion, we may recommend a Map My Mole report before proceeding. This is a formal assessment by a Consultant Dermatologist, who will review your lesion and confirm that CryoPen treatment is clinically appropriate and safe. The report is returned within 48 hours.
2. The treatment
Once we're happy to proceed, your CryoPen treatment will be carried out swiftly and comfortably. The CryoPen delivers a precise jet of nitrous oxide at -89°C to the lesion — you may feel a brief, mild stinging sensation, which passes within seconds. Most treatments are complete in just a few minutes.
3. Results & aftercare
The treated area may blister and a scab will form — this is completely normal and a natural part of the healing process. Allow the scab to drop off naturally without picking. We'll book a follow-up appointment for two weeks after treatment to check on progress. Full healing typically takes 2–6 weeks depending on the lesion.

CryoPen FAQs
Have a question about our Cryotherapy with CryoPen? We’re here to help.
What is CryoPen and how does it work?
CryoPen is a clinically advanced treatment that removes benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions using a pen-like applicator that delivers medical-grade nitrous oxide at -89°C with pinpoint accuracy.
The extreme cold causes the water inside the lesion's cells to freeze and crystallise, safely destroying the unwanted tissue without affecting the healthy skin around it.
As the NHS no longer offers removal of benign cosmetic lesions, CryoPen has become a popular and accessible alternative for those who want an effective, professional solution.
What skin concerns can CryoPen treat?
CryoPen can safely and precisely treat a wide range of benign skin lesions, including skin tags, warts, verrucas, age spots, sun spots, pigmentation spots, seborrhoeic keratosis, cherry angiomas, milia, fibrous papules and molluscum contagiosum.
If you're unsure whether your concern is suitable, we're happy to advise at your consultation.
How do I know my lesion is safe to treat?
Your safety is our absolute priority. Before any CryoPen treatment takes place, we require confirmation that a lesion is benign and appropriate to treat. Our therapist Catherine will assess your lesion using a medical Dermatoscope — a specialist instrument that allows detailed examination of the lesion's characteristics far beyond what is visible to the naked eye.
Where there is any doubt, or where a lesion requires further clinical review, we will recommend a Map My Mole dermatology report before proceeding.
What is a Map My Mole report — and do I need to visit my GP?
Map My Mole is a specialist service run by Consultant Dermatologists who work within the NHS and are registered on the General Medical Council's register of Dermatology. It means you benefit from expert clinical oversight without the need for a separate GP referral.
Using our medical Dermatoscope, Catherine captures detailed images of your lesion and submits them securely to Map My Mole. A full dermatology report is returned within 48 hours, confirming whether CryoPen treatment is appropriate and safe for your lesion.
This service is quick, reliable and affordable — giving you direct access to a Consultant Dermatologist and complete peace of mind before your treatment begins.
A Map My Mole report is an additional £75 for up to three lesions, and we'll let you know at your consultation if it's recommended in your case.
Is a consultation required before treatment?
Yes — a consultation is required before all CryoPen treatments. This allows Catherine to assess your lesion with a medical Dermatoscope, discuss your suitability for treatment, advise on the number of sessions likely needed, and provide a full and transparent pricing breakdown. There is no obligation to proceed after your consultation.
Is the treatment painful?
CryoPen treatment is generally considered pain free. You may experience a brief, mild stinging sensation for a few seconds during the treatment, but this passes almost immediately. Most clients find it very easy to tolerate.
How long does a treatment take?
Treatments are very quick. A small 2mm lesion can take as little as 10 seconds to treat, and most appointments are complete within a few minutes.
What happens after treatment and is there any downtime?
Aftercare is minimal and most clients experience very little downtime. After treatment, the area may blister and a scab will form — this is completely normal and a natural part of the healing process. The scab will look darker and may crust over, but it is important to allow it to heal naturally and let the scab drop off on its own without picking at it.
We will book a follow-up appointment for two weeks after your treatment to check on progress and ensure everything is healing well.
How long will the lesion take to heal completely?
Once treated, the lesion develops a scab as part of the body's natural healing response. Healing typically takes between 2 and 6 weeks, depending on the size and depth of the lesion, the length of the freeze required, and the location on the body. We'll give you a realistic expectation at your consultation.
How many treatments will I need?
Most lesions only require a single treatment. However, depending on the nature, size and depth of the lesion, two or more sessions may occasionally be needed. This will always be discussed with you during your consultation before any treatment takes place, so you know exactly what to expect.
Can CryoPen be used on the face?
Yes. CryoPen's millimetre-level precision makes it safe to use on the face and even in delicate areas close to the eyes — something many alternative treatments are unable to offer safely.

"Gold star for Catherine! She recently checked a mole on my thigh and suggested I have a doc look at it. Took her advice and now have had an early stage Melanoma removed! No further treatment required! So a huge thanks to Catherine and Sharon for this early detection and all the lovely treatments they offer."
